SDS:

SEM:

Sensitization:
Is the development, over time, of an allergic reaction to a chemical. The chemical may cause a mild response on the first few exposures but, as the allergy develops, the response becomes worse with subsequent exposures. Eventually, even short exposures to low concentrations can cause a very severe reaction.

There are two different types of occupational sensitization: skin and respiratory. Typical symptoms of skin sensitivity are swelling, redness, itching, pain, and blistering. Sensitization of the respiratory system may result in symptoms similar to a severe asthmatic attack. These symptoms include wheezing, difficulty in breathing, chest tightness, coughing and shortness of breath.

SIDS:
Screening Information DataSets.

Is a voluntary cooperative international testing program operated under the auspices of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD).
The IUCLID software is the preferred tool for entering data and developing a SIDS Dossier for High Production Volume Chemicals in the OECD HPV Chemicals Programme. The SIDS Dossiers, together with the SIDS Initial Assessment Reports (SIAR), once they are agreed upon by Member countries are published by UNEP Chemicals.

Simulation tests:
Aerobic and anaerobic tests that provide data on biodegradation under specified environmentally relevant conditions. These tests attempt to simulate degradation in a specific environment by use of indigenous biomass, media, relevant solids (i.e. soil, sediment, activated sludge or other surfaces) to allow sorption of the chemical, and a typical temperature that represents the particular environment. A representative and low concentration of test substance is used in tests designed to determine the biodegradation rate constant whereas higher concentrations for analytical reasons are normally used for identification and quantification of major transformation products.

SMEs:
Small and Medium-sized Enterprises.
Petites et Moyennes Entreprises (PME).

SMILES:
Simplified Molecular Input Line Entry Specification.

Is a line notation (a typographical method using printable characters) for entering and representing molecules and reactions.

SMILES contains the same information as might be found in an extended connection table. The primary reason SMILES is more useful than a connection table is that it is a linguistic construct, rather than a computer data structure. SMILES is a true language, albeit with a simple vocabulary (atom and bond symbols) and only a few grammar rules. SMILES representations of structure can in turn be used as "words" in the vocabulary of other languages designed for storage of chemical information (information about chemicals) and chemical intelligence (information about chemistry).

Part of the power of SMILES is that unique SMILES exist. With standard SMILES, the name of a molecule is synonymous with its structure; with unique SMILES, the name is universal. Anyone in the world who uses unique SMILES to name a molecule will choose the exact same name.

One other important property of SMILES is that it is quite compact compared to most other methods of representing structure. A typical SMILES will take 50% to 70% less space than an equivalent connection table, even binary connection tables. For example, a database of 23,137 structures, with an average of 20 atoms per structure, uses only 1.6 bytes per atom when represented with SMILES. In addition, ordinary compression of SMILES is extremely effective. The same database cited above was reduced to 27% of its original size by Ziv-Lempel compression (i.e. 0.42 bytes per atom).

These properties open many doors to the chemical information programmer. Examples of uses for SMILES are:
- Keys for database access
- Mechanism for researchers to exchange chemical information
- Entry system for chemical data
- Part of languages for artificial intelligence or expert systems in chemistry

Examples:
CC (ethane), [OH3+] (hydronium ion), O=C=O (carbon dioxide), [2H]O[2H] (deuterium oxide), C#N (hydrogen cyanide), [235U] (uranium-235), CCN(CC)CC (triethylamine), F/C=C/F (E-difluoroethene), CC(=O)O (acetic acid), F/C=C\F (Z-difluoroethene), C1CCCCC1 (cyclohexane), N[C@@H](C)C(=O)O (L-alanine).

Solubility:
Solubility is the ability of a material to dissolve in water or another liquid. Solubility may be expressed as a ratio or may be described using words such as insoluble, very soluble or miscible.

Often, on a Material Safety Data Sheet, the "Solubility" section describes solubility in water since water is the single most important industrial solvent. Solubility information is useful for planning spill clean-up and fire fighting procedures.

Solvent:
Is a material, usually a liquid, which is capable of dissolving another chemical. Chemicals commonly called solvents can dissolve many different chemicals. Examples of common solvents are water, ethanol, acetone, hexane and toluene.

Specific Gravity:
Is the ratio of the density of a material to the density of water. The density of water is about 1 gram per cubic centimetre (g/cc). Materials which are lighter than water (specific gravity less than 1.0) will float. Most materials have specific gravities exceeding 1.0, which means they are heavier than water and so will sink. Knowing the specific gravity is important for planning spill clean-up and fire fighting procedures. For example, a light flammable liquid such as gasoline may spread and, if ignited, burn on top of a water surface.

SPIN:
Substances in Preparations in Nordic Countries.

SPIN is a database on the use of Substances in Products in the Nordic Countries. The database is based on data from the Product Registries of Norway, Sweden, Denmark and Finland . The database is financed by the Nordic Council of Ministers, Chemical group.

More information can be found on the SPIN web site: http://spin2000.net/.

SS:
Suspended Solids.

SSD:
Species Sensitivity Distribution (statistical method to derive PNEC).

ST:
Surface Tension.

Stability:
Is the ability of a material to remain unchanged in the presence of heat, moisture or air. An unstable material may decompose, polymerize, burn or explode under normal environmental conditions. Any indication that the material is unstable gives warning that special handling and storage precautions may be necessary.

STP:
Sewage Treatment Plant.

Substance Name:
Substance name, chemical name or IUPAC name.

Generally this is the name of the substance according to the rules of the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC). If it is not possible to allocate a precise chemical name (e.g. if the substance is not completely defined), a name has been allocated according to the rules defined for the identification of such chemical substances in the EINECS. Some chemical names listed in the ELINCS were amended according to the notification and the IUPAC nomenclature rules.
